Motorbikes outside a French house

I've just come back from an 1,800 mile motorcycle tour of France.

It was fantastic. A ride to remember.

The weather was great, the roads faultless (once we crossed the Channel) and the scenery quite breathtaking.

And somewhere between winding lanes and café stops (and there were plenty of those), I found myself reflecting on how the ingredients of a great road trip aren’t all that different from what makes great communication.

✅ Start with purpose. Our trip had a clear destination - a major race meeting near Bordeaux. Knowing where you're heading helps shape every decision, from pace to pitstops. It's the same in communication. Clarity of purpose builds momentum.

🛣️ Stay open to the unexpected. One of our best days? A wrong turn that led us into the heart of a stunning medieval town in the Dordogne. Detours can add huge value, whether you're mapping a route or adapting a message. Flexibility turns plans into experiences.

🔍 Mind the detail, but keep the bigger picture in sight. Navigating foreign roads means staying alert to traffic, signage and weather. But it's also about soaking up the journey itself. In communication, precision matters, but so does tone, intent and what people feel.

🌿 Take the quieter path. We deliberately avoided the motorways, choosing country lanes and backroads to meet real people and savour local flavours. It’s a gentle reminder that loud doesn’t always mean effective. Authenticity can be quieter and is often more powerful.

We often get drawn towards bigger brands, bolder messages, flashier campaigns. But sometimes, the smart route is the steady one. Thoughtful. Purposeful. Captivating in its simplicity.

Just like a good ride.

Just like good communication.
